I think that the statement, that the need for religion is decreasing nowadays is not true. Theres a strong difference between the need itself and the way to satisfy it. In my opinion every human has some sort of spiritual need, some kind of god-shaped hole in his mind.
Modern world, or rather the culture of developed society, gives now far more opportunities to satisfy this need (to some point of course) than a man had, lets say, one or two centuries ago. What I think is now observed is that a weak spiritual need of many simple-minded people can be fulfilled just by access to such media as television, so thats the main reason why we are seeing less people in churches. But this is the same category of people, whose belief was earlier very hollow, narrowed to worshipping images and some sort of "fairy tales" about God, heaven etc. This makes religion no longer "an opium for the mass", but rather a mean for more intelligent and, whats more important, sensible people to satisfy their hunger for spiritually rich life, to find answers to question which appear in everyone, who simply thinks a bit deeper about the world he lives in and his life itself.
All in all Im convinced that this certain need, as something we are born with, has not diminished but it can be biased in some other direction for some part of the society.
